Superstitious?

Are you superstitious? Not consciously. I don’t believe when I have broken a mirror I have 7 years bad luck. However I do throw salt over my left shoulder when I spill it. No fear of the number 13 or Friday the 13th or black cats.

Tetty Roozendaal

Gracia Emanuela Sprok

Gracia Emanuela Sprok (b. 18th century). She was an Afro-Surinamese woman who fought for her freedom in the Netherlands. Originally enslaved, she successfully sued for her emancipation in 1795, making her one of the few known Black women in Dutch history to legally challenge slavery and win.

Redoshi

Redoshi (c. 1848 – 1937) a West African woman who was enslaved and smuggled to Alabama. One of the last surviving victims of the slave trade.

Anton de Kim

Anton de Kom (1898–1945). Surinamese anti-colonial activist, writer, and resistance fighter during World War II. Wrote We Slaves of Suriname (Wij slaven van Suriname), the first book to critically analyze Dutch colonial rule from the perspective of the oppressed.
