Bobby Hutton aka Lil’ Bobby #BlackPanthersAt50

Robert James Hutton, sunrise 4/21/50 in Jefferson County Arkansas, sunset 4/6/68 in West Oakland, California.

He was the first recruit and treasurer of the Black Panther Party for Self-defense (BPP).

At age 3, he and his family moved to Oakland after being threatened by nightriders in Arkansas.

He met Huey Newton and Bobby Seale at the North Oakland Neighborhood Anti-Poverty Center.

In May of 1967 he went with other BPP members to Sacramento to protest legislation that would prohibit carrying loaded firearms in public.

On 4/6/68 he was killed by police, shot twelve times even though he had his hands in the air, had stripped to his underwear and had no weapon.

Marlon Brando did his eulogy.

He did not have a gravestone until 35 years after his death.

DeFremery Park in West Oakland was unofficially named after him.

Lil’ Bobby Day is an annual event in April since 1998.
